Fairuz Song 'Habbaytak Bil-Saif' Translated into English by Dr. Ramzi Salti [I Loved You in the Summer]

Fairuz: Habbaytak Bil-Saif [I Loved You in the Summer]

On a cold winter day
When the pavement becomes a lake and the streets are drowning
A girl would come from her old house
He would tell her "wait for me," so she would wait in the street
He would leave and forget her while she withered in the rain.

I loved you in the summer, I loved you in the winter
I waited for you every summer, I waited for you every winter
Your eyes became my summer, mine became your winter
Our meeting place my love will be beyond seasons and time.

A stranger passed by and gave me a letter
Written by my beloved with tears of sadness
I opened the letter, but the words were missing
Then the days flew by while the years sealed our fate
And any trace of that letter was erased by the rain.

Bi-iyyam al-bard, bi-iyyam al-shiti
Wa al-raseef bu7aira, wa al-shari3 ghareeq
Tiji hayk al-bint, min baytya al-3ateeq
Wa yaqul laha "Unturini"
Wa tontor 3al-tareeq
Wa yru7 wa yinsaha
Wa tidhbal bil-shiti

Habbaytak bil-sayf, habbaytak bil shiti
Natartak bil-sayf, natartak bil shiti
Wa 3uyunak al-saif, was 3uyuni al-shiti
Wa mal2ana ya habibi
Khalf al-sayf wa khalf al-shiti

Mar3it al-ghariba, 3atyatni risala
Katabha habibi bil-dam3 al-7azin
Fata7t al-rosala, 7ruf-ha Day3in
Wa mara2it iyyam wa gharrabatna sneen
Wa-7ruf al-risala...Mi7iha al-shiti

Habbaytak bil-sayf, habbaytak bil shiti
Natartak bil-sayf, natartak bil shiti
Wa 3uyunak al-saif, was 3uyuni al-shiti
Wa mal2ana ya habibi
Khalf al-sayf wa khalf al-shiti
