Labaki, known for her directorial work on Capernaum, once again proves her acting chops alongside Zain Al Rafeea زين الرافعي (sometimes spelled Zein Alrafih), who shines in a nuanced role.

Ziad Bakri, who plays the part of the father (Nabil), shared in an interview with Esquire Middle East that being a father means never allowing despair to take control. The Plaestinian actor went on to explain that a father's role is to be the source of safety and warmth for his family, describing Nabil’s character as the fire that keeps his children warm or the ship that carries them through storms.

Zain Al Rafeea’s performance is quite authentic as his role seems to mirror his lived experience where the young actor (who was born in Daraa, Syria, in 2004) fled with his real-life family to Lebanon in 2012, where they lived in the slums of Beirut. At the time of Capernaum’s production, Al Rafeea had no formal training in acting and his portrayal of Zain in that film, a young boy navigating the brutal realities of life as a refugee, was raw and authentic, earning him critical acclaim and numerous awards. Six years later, he has now returned to the screen with his amazing portrayal of Adam (the son) in The Sand Castle.
